Permanent Documents & Records

Legal contracts, compliance records, and personal documents stored permanently with cryptographic proof.

Paper Trails That Cannot Be Altered

Legal contracts, insurance records, compliance documentation, personal certificates: these are the kinds of records that need to exist exactly as they were created, for years or decades, without any possibility of tampering. Traditional storage solutions fail this requirement in subtle ways. Files on a corporate server can be modified without a trace. Cloud backups can be deleted. Even notarized paper documents can be forged.

Arweave provides something these systems cannot: a tamper-proof, timestamped, permanent record that anyone can verify independently.

How Document Storage Works on Arweave

When a document is uploaded to Arweave, the network does three things:

  • Hashes the content: A SHA-256 hash of the document is computed and stored as part of the transaction. Any future change to even a single byte would produce a completely different hash.
  • Timestamps the upload: The transaction is included in a block with a verifiable timestamp, proving exactly when the document was recorded.
  • Replicates globally: The document is stored across a decentralized network of miners worldwide. No single entity can modify or delete it.

The result is a document that can be independently verified by anyone, at any time, without trusting the person who uploaded it.

Use Cases

Legal Contracts Signed agreements stored on Arweave create an audit trail that both parties can reference. The timestamp proves when the contract was recorded. The hash proves it has not been altered since. Courts and arbitrators can verify authenticity without relying on either party's copy.

Insurance and Compliance Regulated industries require documentation that proves what was known, when it was known, and that records have not been altered after the fact. Arweave transactions satisfy all three requirements by design.

Personal Records Wills, birth certificates, diplomas, professional credentials, property deeds: these are documents people need to preserve for a lifetime. Storing them on Arweave means they survive hard drive failures, house fires, and the eventual shutdown of whatever cloud service you were using.

Intellectual Property Uploading a creative work to Arweave creates a timestamped proof of existence. If a dispute arises over who created something first, the Arweave transaction provides verifiable evidence of the earliest recorded version.

Decentralized Notarization

Traditional notarization proves that a document existed at a specific time and was signed by a specific person. Arweave achieves the same thing cryptographically:

Feature Traditional Notary Arweave Transaction
Proof of existence Notary stamp and seal SHA-256 hash on the blockweave
Timestamp Notary's written date Block timestamp (network-verified)
Tamper detection Difficult to verify Any change breaks the hash
Accessibility Physical office required Accessible from any gateway
Longevity Paper degrades, offices close Permanent via storage endowment
Cost $5 to $25 per document Fractions of a cent for small files

The cryptographic approach is strictly stronger. A notary stamp can be forged. A SHA-256 hash on a decentralized blockweave cannot.

Provenance and Verification

Every document on Arweave carries metadata tags that establish its provenance:

  • Content-Type: What kind of document it is (PDF, image, text)
  • App-Name: Which application uploaded it
  • Owner: The wallet address that signed the transaction
  • Custom tags for contract numbers, case IDs, or any other identifiers

This metadata is indexed and searchable through gateway GraphQL APIs. Organizations can build systems that automatically verify document authenticity by checking the Arweave transaction against the expected hash.

AI Content Verification

As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, proving the authenticity and origin of documents grows more important. Storing original documents on Arweave creates a verifiable chain of provenance. You can prove that a specific document existed before a certain date, in a specific form, uploaded by a specific wallet. This intersects directly with AI content verification efforts across the industry.

The Permanence Guarantee

Documents stored on Arweave benefit from the same economic model that secures all data on the network. The storage endowment ensures that miners are paid to store and serve documents for decades. As storage hardware costs continue to decline, the endowment's purchasing power grows, extending the effective storage period further.

For records that need to last, permanent data storage is not a luxury. It is a requirement. Arweave is the only storage network designed to meet it.
